Michigan State University’s College of Music expanded its music education and music therapy offerings to children and youth in Detroit as part of a wider university effort to share faculty expertise and resources with the city’s residents.

The programs are built on the knowledge that exposure to music dramatically enhances learning, life skills, cognitive development, social awareness, and problem solving—all skills that are transferable and necessary in these changing economic times.

The mission of the MSU Community Music School-Detroit (CMS-D) is to provide a creative and welcoming environment where music experiences, education and therapy services inspire individuals at all ability levels and stages of life to achieve their personal best. Founded on the belief that music dramatically enhances the quality of life, CMS-D offers opportunities for the study, appreciation and therapeutic use of music while nurturing the musical development of all.  Financial aid is available to those with need.

CMS-D provides high-quality music education for children from low-income families, as well as seniors and individuals with special needs. By providing music education resources to families in the City of Detroit, CMS-D is investing in skill development for a stronger community and helping put youth on the path to college and careers.
